This week's video includes two clips from last night's Panthers vs Maple Leafs game. In both clips, the Leafs are using the space high in the offensive zone to create options with a numbers advantage by bringing 3 players above the circles in order to generate scoring chances. This offensive concept can be used in both power play and even strength situations to create confusion for the defending team, increase passing options, and generate more shooting lanes while taking advantage of this consistently available space. The first example is a high roll on the power play while the second is a high middle pop by a forward off an offensive zone faceoff win. Teams nowadays must not only get the puck to the point but also get their forwards up there as well. Both forwards and defensemen should be getting practice reps up high to build up their experience and skills required to execute in these high offensive situations. Players must be willing and able to make plays from all over the ice and use the entire offensive zone to maximize their team's offensive opportunities and production.
