This week's video is all about encouraging multisport participation for athletes to develop long-term at their ultimate, primary sport of choice. Early specialization seems to be more common than ever. However, this may not be the best road to travel. It narrows an athlete's experience and overall athletic development. It also primes an athlete to become more prone to overuse injuries, which eliminate a player's most important ability...AVAILABILITY. Choosing to participate in other sports and activities does not mean that an athlete won't continue to improve in their primary sport. The athlete will be exposed to many of the same skills and concepts, adverse situations, and successes to translate back to hockey. They will also develop complementary movement patterns, energy systems, and tactical skills that will be a big factor in improving their overall athleticism while mitigating potential overuse injuries.
These clips include multisport concepts found in hockey, soccer, and basketball such as Finding Space, Timing, Give & Go, Teamwork, Deception, Acceleration, etc. These skills and concepts can be found in many other sports, so try as many as you can to improve your athleticism, learning capacity, and your overall hockey game!
