For me, every morning starts the same way: Wake up next to my wife, with my dog on top of me and in my face. A moment of gratitude for waking up and a moment of gratitude for all the things in AND out of my life. I make my way downstairs. Before I feed Bauer or put on the coffee, I open the back door and/or window in the kitchen, listen to the birds, take in the view of our backyard and the field, and then I turn on the music. The music is sometimes carefully selected & sometimes shuffled through my vast library. But there’s always one rule about the morning music; it must be upbeat & positive.
Today’s first song was perfect:
“Accentuate the Positive” by Dr. John
Not only is it one of my all time favorites and words to live by, it sparked my memory. I remember hearing it in the movie, “The Mighty Ducks”, during a montage where the team is coming together, enjoying each others’ company, and having fun with their whole team, including their parents and coach. I won’t get into the entire synopsis of the movie here, but I will use it to make a point. It was their collective turning point as a team, as well as Coach Gordon Bombay. It established unity and set a tone of positivity for the remainder of the season. Obviously, with it being a Disney movie they go on to win it all, but they do so by beating the team led by Jack Reilly: A stern, old-school disciplinarian and ego-driven, dictator - Negative by nature and demeanor.
My points are these when it comes to Relentless Positivity:
- The movie was about more than just another Disney movie with a happy ending. Part of it was about how powerful team unity and positivity are in sports and in life. It contributes so much to overcoming adversity.
- It’s a daily guide to an enjoyable, rewarding, and healthier life. When times are tough and stress is high, that’s when it’s needed most.
- It amazes me how many coaches & parents still think today’s athlete will thrive in negativity. Players want to feel good about themselves and their game! That doesn't mean they go without correction. It's about the delivery and the communication. Players need confidence to achieve a flow state during competition. Players need to enjoy the process of playing and training for sports in order to develop and perform.
- This applies to all areas of life and business.
- The world needs all the positivity it can get right now.
- Relentless Positivity is a daily choice & starts everyday in the morning!
