This video is all about helping your teammates close the gap and catch the opposition on the backcheck. How so? By giving them a turbo boost that allows them to skate faster!
In this clip, Tampa Bay transitions from offense to defense after a change of possession in the offensive zone. Toronto quickly breaks the puck out through the middle of the ice and have an instant 3v2 rush from the top of their own defensive zone circles. With all three Lightning forwards trapped low in the zone, they must get on the backcheck in a hurry to pursue the rush and put pressure on the attacking Leafs.
With a considerable gap in space and pace between the Leafs and Lightning forwards, the Lightning players work together to create a solution. Cirelli has the inside track and initial acceleration to become F1 on the backcheck. Killorn recognizes this and uses his stick to give Cirelli a push on the backside to help his teammate accelerate at a quicker rate. Hagel also recognizes that Cirelli is their best chance at having F1 disrupt the Leafs' attack and gives him a secondary boost to speed up his backcheck even further. This teamwork directly impacts the play and allows Cirelli to close the gap on Marner and breakup the 3v2 rush against at the blue line.
